Behind The Scenes of Building Community

LISSOME IWD-113.jpg

Ever guess what and how we do the things we do in order to create “community” within Lissome…? As it turns out, there’s quite a bit that goes into it.

One of the biggest drivers we focus on is group dynamics. That means actively driving connection and encouraging women to meet those around them that are outside of their own little comfort circle.

We do this using many tools, policies and processes that we have created by scratch to create an environment conducive to this culture;

  • 5 Second Rule

We encourage Coaches and Members to identify when someone arrives for the first time and is looking lost, to go and approach them within 5 seconds of spotting them.

  • Buddy System

We regularly introduce women to find a buddy they don’t know very well and engage with them to find out more about that person. This really works well in sessions where there can sometimes be a mix of crews training from a range of time slots IE/ Saturday morning sessions

  • Playing Games

We OFTEN play fun games to warm up that engage women and make them LAUGH! It puts them out of their comfort zone and sometimes you have to act silly but this often breaks down boundaries and facades so that women can really interact on a deeper level.

  • Mixing Up The Room

We regularly monitor where women place themselves in the room in terms of order and habit. People tend to often go to the same spot every session and this delays and prevents inter connection with those they don’t come into contact with. Our coaches look for ways to break these cycles by encouraging shifts, changes and for people to place themselves in opposite areas occasionally. IE/ This could be someone often stands in the front row and centre during their barbell lift portion of the session. We might ask them to go to the back left for a change so they can meet and mingle with those up the back. Or Vice Versa we ask those at the back to come closer to the front.

All of these things are very subtle acknowledgments and improvements we actively talk about, monitor and look at ways to improve so that we are always 100% focused on this community and how to keep it all inclusive and open!

We ask that our members consider these things and how they can actively participate in helping us with this:

When was the last time you mixed in the room??

When was the last time you introduced yourself to a brand new member?

When was the last time you looked at buddying up with someone new in a workout??

Every one of you members experienced this (albeit probably unknowingly) when you first came along to Lissome. And after you have had your settling in phase, (which could be a week, it could be 3 months, it all just depends on how you personally then feel able to give back and contribute) Its important for you to then think about giving back to those around you.

Every girl that walks into our gym is in awe of you women! They don’t often see or understand the hard work you’ve put in to get there! They also don’t often know where you may have been at yourself when you first started. So it’s important to share that story with those girls so you can inspire THEM to know they too can achieve and be like you!!!

Love the Lissome Team XO
